Delta Pods Architects’ “Elisabethinen Wien-Mitte” project awarded the Monument Protection Medal of the Republic of Austria

From 2013 to fall 2022, Delta Pods Architects was responsible for the renovation, conversion and extension of the project "Elisabethinen Wien-Mitte".

The Monument Protection Medal was also awarded – in the spirit of the diversity and variety of listed buildings – for projects that are particularly sustainable, innovative or exemplary in terms of climate protection and contribute to preserving buildings in line with their listed status and making them climate-friendly. This was awarded to Elisabethinen Wien-Mitte at the end of 2023. These combine a wide variety of user groups on an area of 30,000 square meters in the middle of Vienna’s 3rd district on Landstraßer Hauptstraße: a hospital, a nursing home and a convent are housed at the site.

Over a construction period of eight years, the old Elisabethinen building in Vienna was carefully renovated with the support of the Federal Monuments Office and modern extensions were built. Old and new are now harmoniously combined architecturally. Special construction challenges were the consideration of monument protection, archaeological finds, the outdoor facilities with the historic mulberry tree (Viennese natural monument no. 4) as well as the new construction and renovation during ongoing operations with coordinated logistics and communication. In addition, the Elisabethinen are a beacon project for sustainability with regard to the current and future special significance of building in existing buildings and inner-city redensification.

At the end of 2023, a total of 16 people who had rendered outstanding services to the preservation of monuments were awarded the Monument Protection Medal. Sr. Barbara Lehner received the medal for the expansion and renovation of the Elisabethinen site in Vienna’s third district as the client and owner. She also accepted the award on behalf of Renate Schraml, construction manager on the owner’s side, who carefully realized the project, as well as for the architectural firm Delta Pods Architects (architecture division of the DELTA Group), which was responsible for the planning and execution.
